Indications:

  • Pain management (over large area)
  • Muscle contraction for reeducation
  • Edema control
  • Bone stimulation

Contraindications/Precautions:

  • Do not use on a person who has:
  • --A history of heart disease
  • --An implanted pacemaker
  • Do not treat the thoracic area
  • Be cautions over areas of impaired sensation or lesions

Electrode Placement:

Crisscross with area to be stimulated in the center of the “X”


Procedures:

1. Slowly increase intensity

2. Ask about pins and needles feeling  increase current until feels more comfortable

3. Chronic pain – use low pulse rate (1-5 pps). Acute pain – use high pulse rate (80-200 pps)

4. Dosage: use maximal current that is comfortable to patient

5. Length of application: 20-30 min.

6. Frequency of application: Once or twice daily as needed for pain

7. Duration of therapy: Can use until no longer effective


1. Set pulse rate (<10 pps for edema and chronic pain. >30 pps for disuse atrophy and spasm reduction)

2. Set duty cycle

3. Dosage: use maximal current that is comfortable to patient

4. Length of application: 10-30 min.

5. Frequency of application: Once or twice daily (separated by 3-4 hours)

6. Duration of therapy: Can use until active exercise is fully begun

Indications:
  • Muscle contraction for reeducation
  • Prevent disuse muscle atrophy
  • Edema control
  • Decrease muscle spasm (muscle relaxation)

Contraindications/Precautions:

Do not use:

  • Over the heart
  • On a person with a pacemaker
  • Potential cancer areas

Be cautions when:

  • Over areas of impaired sensation or lesions

Electrode Placement:

Bipolar on motor point (prox. end of muscle) and on the belly of muscle
